Investors balanced caution over new spikes in coronavirus infections against economic reopening efforts. Shares of tech giants Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Alphabet and Microsoft lifted 1.1%-1.4%. Drug distributor Cardinal Health's shares jumped 6.7% as the pandemic boosted third quarter sales. But shares of Under Armour fell by 9.7% after the company forecast a 50%-60% drop in second quarter revenue. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was down by 109 points or 0.5%. The S&P500 index was up by 0.01% and the Nasdaq index lifted 71 points or 0.8%.

US sharemarkets were higher on Friday. Boosting sentiment were constructive trade talks between the US and China. The Energy sector rose 4.3% in response to a higher oil price. Shares in Apple rose 2.4% after the company said it would start reopening US stores. At the close of trade, the Dow Jones index was up 455 points or 1.9%. The S&P500 index was up by 1.7% and the Nasdaq index lifted 141 points or 1.6%. Over the week the Dow rose 2.6%, the S&P 500 rose by 3.5% and the Nasdaq gained 6%.

The Aussie market has snapped two days of losses on Friday to gain 26.9pts or 0.5% and now lifting for six of the past seven weeks. Gains were rather broad based with only healthcare & staples lower. Retail stocks led improvements on Federal government plans of easing restrictions.
